Who are Help a London Child?
Help a London Child (HALC) improves the lives of thousands of vulnerable children living in our capital city. London is not only one of the wealthiest cities in the world, but it is also home to children suffering from abuse, poverty, homelessness, disability, and illness. Help a London Child specialises in funding grass roots projects and supporting their work to improve the lives of these children.
Every year HALC funds hundreds of children's voluntary projects in the Capital. HALC receives hundreds of grant application forms annually, which are then assessed by our independent panel from London's voluntary sector who decide where the money should go. In fact, there is probably a project around the corner to you that we have helped!
Help a London Child is an appeal run by GCap Charities. Registered Charity Number: 1091657
Who is behind this website?
This website was created by Capital Radio in order to make it fun to donate to Help a London Child. The website was produced by Public Zone.
Where does the money go?
The money goes directly to funding grass roots projects and supporting the work of Help a London Child.
Is it secure to use my credit card on this site?
Yes. We use WorldPay and it is a secure site.
Do I own the landmark?
No! We can only dream… Of course, you are clearly not buying a London landmark for as little as £5 but you are adopting a "virtual" bit of London for just six months to help support the great work of Help a London Child.
Can I change the photo and description on the landmark I adopted?
Yes, once you have adopted the landmark you have the opportunity to change the photo, edit the description and enter a link to your own website. You can do this after payment, and you'll also be sent an email with a link that allows you to change it later on.
How do I use the map?
Use the zoom bar and arrows on the top left hand side of the map to zoom in and out and north, south, east or west. You can also search by postcode or landmark type using the search field. You can also grab and drag the map around to navigate by using your mouse. Postcode searches will land you in the middle of that postcode area. You can then click on any icon that interests you to read a full description and adopt it.
Can I donate more money?
Yes! The prices are only a recommended minimum. You can pay as much as you'd like and add on an extra donation at the payment page.
Can I search by postcode?
Yes. Postcode searches will land you in the middle of that postcode area. You only need to use the first half of your postcode eg: W1 or SW19.
Can I search by tube station?
Yes. Use the drop-down menu on the search page.
How can I find my area of London?
You can search by postcode, tube station or by landmark, or by simply working your way around the map and zooming in and out as you go.
Why is my favourite pub/ school/ shop/ park/ landmark/ stadium/ market/ bridge/ not on the map for me to adopt?
We can't include everything, so we included what we could to begin with. Depending on demand we will add more landmarks at a later date so let us know by clicking here and come back later on to see if it's there…
Can I adopt multiple landmarks?
Yes, but to make it fair you have to do this in separate transactions so everyone gets a chance. If you want to donate more than the recommended minimum you can pay as much as you'd like and add on an extra donation at the payment page.
What if someone else is trying to adopt the same landmark as me?
If someone has started a transaction to adopt the landmark it will appear as 'under offer'. If they do not go through with the adoption it will appear again for adoption after five minutes. If they do go through with the adoption it will appear as 'sold'. You cannot adopt landmarks that are 'under offer' or 'sold'.
What does it mean when it says 'under offer'?
If someone has started a transaction to adopt the landmark it will appear as 'under offer'. If they do not go through with the adoption it will appear again for sale after five minutes. If they do go through with the adoption it will appear as 'sold'. You cannot adopt landmarks that are 'under offer' or 'sold'.
Can I bid to buy something for a higher price that has already been adopted?
No. It's not an auction, it works more like a no-refund purchase.
Can I resell my landmark?
No. Once you've adopted it you cannot sell it to someone else. The point is to raise money for Help a London Child so each landmark is only able to be sold once.
Do I have to adopt a landmark to donate to Help a London Child?
No. You can donate money without adopting a landmark by following the links from the homepage or clicking here.
I adopted a landmark but I want to return and donate more money?
You can donate money without adopting a landmark by following the links from the homepage or clicking here. Or you can adopt another landmark in a second transaction. Or both!
Do I receive anything?
Yes! Asides from the warm feeling that results from donating money to a really good cause, you will receive an email with a PDF certificate telling you about Help a London Child and acknowledging your donation.
Can I get a refund?
All donations are final and any refunds will only be given at the discretion of the GCap Management.
